“This porridge is too hot, this porridge is too cold, but this porridge is just right!” Recognize this quote from Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Bill and Vera Cleaver’s novel, Where the Lilies Bloom, proves that two contrasting storylines can be very similar. The novel is based around the Luther family (Mary Call, Devola, Ima Dean, Romey, and Roy Luther.) Early in the novel, the father, Roy Luther, dies. He has passed on the responsibilities of the household to his 14 year old daughter, Mary Call. The story continues with the children trying to keep their father’s death a secret as well as to survive without him. In Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks steals food from the bear’s home without their permission. Similarly, in Where the Lilies Bloom, Devola and her sister, Ima Dean, go to their neighbors home to retrieve hay. In the text, Romey states that in addition to the hay, “We got some nice cow food too” (Cleaver 146). Ultimately, these two events are very similar because in both cases someone enters a home and takes food while the owner is unaware. When comparing these two circumstances, it is evident that the Where the Lilies Bloom, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears have corresponding events. …show more content…

In Where the Lilies Bloom, Romey stuffs a bear in order to scare away unwanted quests from coming to their home. Mrs. Connell, a despised neighbor, is driving towards the Luther home and sees the bear. Devola is curiously watching and gets Mary Call’s attention by saying: “Look, Mary Call. She’s changed her mind” (Cleaver 140). Next, Mrs. Connell turns her car around because the bear has frightened her. When analyzing these two events from Where the Lilies Bloom and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, it is evident that in many cases that the stories are similar. For this reason, the corresponding events of the two text selections are once again
