Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and Annika Sorenstam. These are just a fraction of athletes that have helped golf become more recognized as a sport. Although these pioneers exercise great athleticism, their sport is not recognized by a large portion of people. Naysayers think that if you can have fun at something without being good at it, it should not be considered a sport. In my opinion that should make it an even better sport. Another reason they disagree is because it is something you can do while drinking or smoking. I don’t think this argument is valid because there is nothing stopping you from drinking or smoking while playing a leisurely game of football or baseball. The Olympics are without a doubt the highest stage in all of sports. Athletes from all over the world come together to compete in their sport. Golf now has the honor of being one those sports. It has not always been an Olympic sport but it was added to the event in Rio De Janeiro in 2016. Golf was also apart of the Olympics 1900 and 1904. Women were not allowed in the 1904 event in St. Louis, Missouri. It took years of preparation and over $60 million for the course in Rio. The Olympic committee would not expend this amount of resources for something that isn’t a sport. In 2016 Justin Rose of Great Britain won the men’s gold medal, Henrik Stenson of Sweden won silver, and Matt Kuchar of the United States won the bronze medal. On the women’s side Inbee Park of South Korea won the gold, Lydia Ko of New Zealand won silver, and Shanshan Feng of China walked away with bronze. Only sports are showcased in the Olympics such as swimming, running, and basketball. Therefore, being that golf is now in the Olympics it should, without a doubt, be noticed as a sport by all
