Looks Are Not Always As They Seem In Flannery O’ Connors story “ Good Country People,” the author leaves the story for the reader to interpret the different true and underlying meanings. The reader can understand, after reading this story, that the looks of the main characters can be very deceiving. Joy, better known as Hulga, and Manly Pointers appearance at the beginning of the story varies greatly to the people that we realize that these same people are by the end. Joy is the daughter of Mrs. Hopewell. She has blonde hair, and is larger than normal size. When Joy was only ten years old, her leg got shot off in a hunting accident. He makes an appearance at the house where Hulga lives, trying to sell bibles to her mother. Since Hulga was an atheist, there currently were not any bibles in the house. As the reader thinks of a person going from house to house, he or she can automatically assume that the person is a good Christian. Manly Pointer has dinner with the family while trying to sell his bibles. While having dinner with the family, Manly Pointer tells them that he has a heart condition and he may not live long. Coincidental enough, Manly and Hulga have the same condition. After dinner, Joy disappeared outside. Manly packed his things and headed out. He ran into Hulga after coming down the steps and confronted her directly. They decided that they would meet up on Saturday and go into the woods together. While walking through the woods, he asked softly, “Where does your wooden leg join on?” (285). Of course, Hulga was embarrassed. The whole time while they were together he tried to make her feel like she was very special to him. He even told her that the leg was what made her different, and that is what he liked. Later, he even convinces her to take her leg off. At the end of the story, Manly Pointer ends up being a totally opposite person than he says that he is.
