“Good Witch Bad Witch”: Unforgiving Ways
In the short story “ Good Witch Bad Witch” by Gregory Sanders he illustrates how Rex narrates his fond childhood memories and his inability to forgive his favorite aunt racist comments. Later in the story he sees himself parallel to Grandmother Gertrude the woman who was dislike and would have been dishonored by her entire family. This text illustrates that a Physical and Historical setting is a reflection of the family members true character. The Historical setting demonstrates the protagonist Ain’t Aubria narrow mindedness. Ain’t Aubria the hostess of christmas family gatherings welcomed everyone to her beautiful wealthy Houston home, she takes over and spoils them with a big traditional christmas feast and doesn’t let anyone open up their gift unless everyone has gathered around

Although he felt so comfortable being himself allowed to explore his sexuality by helping out in the kitchen; cooking, cleaning and even being able to be wear some of her high heels without being judge Rex had a difficult time understanding why Ain’t Aubria insisted on him using the word “nigger” while singing the little piggy nursery rhyme. It was the 1960’s and this was the time of the civil rights movements, according to the houston civil rights movement blog they mentioned that civil rights reformers in Houston struggled against the system of segregation based on deeply embedded norms. This was demonstrated when Rex mentioned a brief background about Ain’t Aubria and her loyalty to her mother who ironically was given the name Mammy a name given to a black nanny caring for white children, and used by a white woman who was racist. Her upbringing would definitely explain why Ain’t Abria had a difficult time changing her set ways when referring to color folks and that’s why she had such a hard
