Introduction. The Gospel of Mark is one of the four canonical gospels and one of the three synoptic gospels. The Gospel according to Mark is believed to be the oldest of the four books. I chose this particular passage because it identifies Jesus Christ as the messiah and affirming his deity. The passage shows us why it is very important to serve misfortunate people in service to God. The main thesis is to show that with man not everything is possible but with God all thing are possible. The teachings in the passage was slated towards the conventional wisdom of the Jewish sect at the time. Verse (17) begins with a man who fell down on his knees before Jesus and referred to Jesus as “Good Teacher”. He asked Jesus “how do I inherit eternal life in the Messiah’s Kingdom?” (Matthew19:16-29) This man was presented to the Lord as a rich man by all three synoptic Gospels. He began to remind the man that no one is good by nature. Only God alone is good. Jesus does not in any way disclaim divinity. Judaism universal doctrine was that God was always perfect and good. The Lord here was trying to lead the young man to recognize the fact that Jesus was in fact God. Verse (19) Jesus quoted from the second table of the Decalogue. The mere fact that man cannot keep these commandments perfectly is why Jesus only mentions the second half of the Decalogue. Jesus does have the ability to keep all the Decalogue and therefore by believing and being baptized into Christ men are saved. This was the point the Lord was trying to make to the young man. Verse (20) the man is given great credit here in this verse. He could have said “I need nothing” but rather recognized that despite his current circumstances he was still lacking his desired eternal needs even though he tried to keep Gods
