For years, people have been saying, "the darkest hour is just before the dawn," but that does not apply here. The light is snuffed and only "the pale yellow light of the moon" is seen. (Shelley 139). Mary Shelley usually writes Romanitc novels, however, Frankentsien exhibits numerous events and contains elements that suggest Gothic intent. In the end, the darkest hour is the only hour. A prime example is depicted when the Monster "[grasps William 's] throat to silence him and in a moment [William lays] dead at [his] feet" (Shelley 100). There are many Gothic elements seen in Frankenstein. Even so, the novel is commonly thought to be a Romance. It is no surprise that readers may find the delicate and lovely scenes attractive and enticing, however, they miss the overlying violence and dark, gloomy elements. The Gothic elements that Shelley articulates help convey that ones actions can make a peer depressed, suicidal, or violent towards others.
