Gothic Literature is commonly recognized by it’s morose and macabre setting. To qualify as Gothic literature it is necessary for the story to place an emphasis on mystery, to intensify the sense of anxiety and terror. Setting is as important in modern gothic fiction; such as Joyce Carol Oates’s “Where is Here?”, as it is in traditional gothic literature like Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Generally, most victorian stories take place in a large, barren, ancestral house. It is also alluded that these buildings have secrets and unknown tragic backstories that still plague the house.
