Branches of Government Research Paper The legislative branch of the government was established by the first article of The United States Constitution. The main responsibility of this branch of the government is to make sure the other two branches are staying in line. The legislative branch had the power to overrule bills being set by the other branches. The process of overruling is known as vetoing. This branch is composed of the House Of Representatives and Senate. Together they form the Congress whom has the power to do many things including to declare war. The president is Chief of state which requires him to be a role model to the American people. The president represents a living symbol of the United States of America. Responsibilities of chief of state include: congratulating astronauts after their journey to space, greeting visitors when they arrive at the White House, and are also required to give speeches on the Fourth of July. As Chief executive the president is responsible for all the workers of the executive branch. Chief executive also decides how laws are enforced and chooses what officials control the executive branch. Other responsibilities of the chief executive include: appointing the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, calling cabinet meetings to discuss problems, and investigating problems of The Federal Bureau of Investigation. As chief diplomat the president decides what our foreign diplomats will discuss with other countries. The president also decides the United States foreign policies. Other duties as chief diplomat include: meeting with British leaders in London, hosting Japanese diplomats at the White House, and communication procedures with Russia. As commander in chief the president is in charge of the United States armed forces. The president commands all the generals and decides the severity of military action. Even though this is a law today it was not set into action until the 25th amendment was set into play. The 25th amendment has been used many times throughout the history of our country. It is used when a President is killed or has died of sickness. The first time this happened was with the 10th president John Tyler who became president when Henry Harrison died one month into his presidency. If the President of the United State dies in office, the Vice President will assume the position of the presidency. Although this is the law today, this was not always the case prior to the 25th amendment. In fact, it was never actually clear in the Constitution that the Vice-President takes over for the President. The Vice-President has taken over for the President several times in our history, usually after the president as been killed or dies of sickness and the first time this happened was when John Tyler, the 10th president, became president after William Henry Harrison died after a month as President. The 25th amendment allows for the Vice President to become president in the event of the presidents death, if he resigns or if he is impeached. The reason for the 25th amendment was so that if a president was found physically unable to do his job a candidate from a different party wouldn 't be allowed to take over as president.
