Government Predictions In George Orwell's 1984

The book, 1984, was written decades ago about a future that is already past, however the predictions Orwell made are unfortunately coming true. The endless war in the book that evokes peace among Oceania’s people is only a prediction of today's War on Terror. The whole world is constantly at war with each other or even with its own people. Citizens today are at war with their own government arguing about surveillance rights. In 1984, Orwell predicted that a powerful government, like the Party, would have 24 hour surveillance on anyone. However in today's world instead of telescreens, cell phones are used to monitor our behavior. Blakinger explains, “Like telescreens, they can even be used for government surveillance as the FBI proved in 2006”(2). …show more content…

The author explains about Winston,“the Party will force him to agree that “TWO AND TWO MAKE FIVE”( Kakutani 1). This is just like the way Sean Spicer tried to convince the world that Mr. Trump’s inauguration crowd was the largest ever. As 1984 character Winston sees it, the Party will tell one to reject the evidence of your senses. Not only are speeches by this leader show a trail of Orwell’s prediction but so does daily news. Many false stories fill the wide web and try to make their way into our heads. Another hypothesis in 1984 is how Orwell predicts that the word science will not exist. Currently, as Kakutani explains, “Trump administration is scrutinizing studies and data published by researchers at the Environmental Protection Agency while placing new work on “temporary hold” ”( Kakutani 1). The administration is basically saying that the scientific evidence is not enough to prove anything just like the Party explains. Orwell's prediction of the future’s government is not too far fetched with the events one sees take place in the government
