Grace Abbott is known for her actions against children working under the age of ten. She was involved with the “Children's Bureau” from 1921 to 1934. She was born in Nebraska in 1878. Grace started life as a high school teacher, then finished as a well-known leader in the Children’s Bureau. She created the “Immigrants Protective League” in 1909 and became the head of the Children Bureau in 1921. Grace also wrote and published three books. After she got her degree in political science, Grace created the “Immigrants Protective League.” She started the organization to help new arrivals from different countries, like immigrants, to make it easier to move to other countries. Grace felt that immigrants needed protection from those who would want to hurt them because they weren’t from here. Grace always found a way to help immigrants adjust to their new homes. She worked hard to help them. In 1917, Grace moved to Washington, D.C. She headed up the Child Labor Division with the Children's Bureau. As a leader in the Child Labor Division, she went to the Supreme Court asking them to put stricter rules against the use of child labor on other parts of the world. The Supreme Court, didn’t agree with her, as it interfered with the states’ rights. This lost helped Grace and only strengthened her opinion on child labor. Grace became the head of the “Children's Bureau” in 1921. In her new position, she started another movement to help and to provide healthcare to pregnant women and mothers. She wanted to gain more followers for her movements. The funding for this effort came from the “Sheppard-Towner Act of 1921”, they allowed Grace to voice out her opinion on big matters and help her by providing support. Grace got the attention of more than 3,000 centers nationwide that wanted to take part of her programs. She wrote a lot of articles and books about child welfare and other social issues during her time as the head of the Children’s Bureau.
