Bartolome de Las Casas says that the Indians were gentle sheep and the Spaniards rushed in like a bunch of starving wolves, tigers and lions ready to devour. On December 9, 1531, the Lady of Guadalupe appeared to an Aztec Indian whom had just converted to the Catholic Faith, his name is Juan Diego. Mary asked Juan Diego to tell the Bishop to build a church in the location she needed it to be built. Juan Diego carried the news to the Bishop, but the Bishop wanted proof that the message he was brought was directly from the Lady of Guadalupe herself. Juan Diego went back and told her what the Bishop had asked for.

In this article “African Dimensions Of The Stono Rebellion”, John Thornton a professor of history and African American studies, who wrote about the African slaves in the Americas, and specifically the servants in South Carolina during the early eighteenth century. In his writing, the author describes the personality of Africans and their desire to escape from slavery, going through obstacles on their path to freedom. John Thornton is primarily an Africanist, with a specialty in the history of West Central Africa before 1800. His work has also carried him into the study of the African Diaspora, and from there to the history of the Atlantic Basin as a whole, also in the period before the early nineteenth century. The first piece of artwork I critiqued was the famous Virgin of Guadalupe. The Virgin of Guadalupe is currently exhibited in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City. The piece of art is not solely a painting, but an enconchado. It was made into wood, and it essentially creates a reflective surface that appears as moving. Also, I like how they explain their theory on the woman of the apocalypse and how it relates to this piece of art.

The Dominican Republic today is a major tourist destination and has become a major source of sugar, coffee, and other exports. But the Dominican Republic had to suffer a lot in order to prevail the way they did, undergoing being enslaved by the Spaniards while on the other side of the island the Haitians were enslaved by the french hence the obvious difference in languages and cultures. The main difference is that the Dominican Republic lost their racial identity and until the present day are unaware of their true racial identity. Slavery affects every country and person differently but in the Dominican Republic, slavery took away the nation’s identity.

With agricultural farming, being the revenue source of the new colonial settlers there would soon be a great demand for labor. In beginning, this study will compare the captivity narrative of Mary Rowlandson and Mary Jemison. These narratives of Indian captivity in the mid-17th century provide a way to understand the methods that both women employed to survive. The first similarity between these two women is related to their Protestant background, which was a normative part of colonial life in New England during this historical period. In this manner, Rowlandson utilizes the religious tenets of practical religious belief to define her captivity with the Indians: “Life-mercies are heart-affecting-mercies: of great impression and force, and to enlarge pious hearts in praises of God” (Rowlandson 10). This is also evident in the Protestant upbringing of Mary Jemison, which defines the foundations of their original cultural heritage that is shared in these capacity narratives: “For it was the daily practice of my father, morning and evening, to attend, in his family; to the worship of God”
