Mathematics to me goes beyond numbers and theorems, it is the language in which The Book of Nature is written, as Galileo so beautifully expressed. It is complex and fundamentally challenging, yet the thought process and problem-solving ways have fascinated me since I was a child. What makes mathematics so fascinating is how something that is a priori fits the physical world so perfectly. Pure mathematics mentally stimulates me and I spent a huge chunk of my undergraduate studying it, but I am captivated by the application of mathematics in the socioeconomic world.

Finance is extremely important; in the business world and in our everyday lives but I never realized how big a role mathematics plays in finance. I was introduced to mathematical finance by the course ‘Mathematical Theory of Interest’ in third year and my interest in the subject grew from there. It was hard at times when I spend hours trying to work out one problem, but when I finally did solve it, the satisfaction I felt was is euphoric. I wanted to learn more. Articles and books helped quench my thirst for knowledge but I needed something in which I could actively participate. This lead me to apply for summer internships and I ended up working as a finance intern at Gulf Petrochem, an oil and energy based company, in Dubai. …show more content…

I learnt about financial practices and accounting principles while being responsible for daily business operations. I also had the opportunity to interact with their clients from all over the world, which gave me an idea about how financial operations are done globally. The skills I acquired and the relationships I built while working there will definitely help me excel in the program and in my future
