The decision for me to move to New Zealand was made so that I could be provided with greater and higher education opportunities that my home country was not able to offer. I found the Western way of education to be freer and thought provocative whereas the Korean way of education was very rote with limited freedom. Having studied in New Zealand for a period of time, I was able to incorporate both the Western and Asian ways of learning whenever solving problems. To this day, I believe it was my ability to utilize both methods which helped me excel in many subjects, especially Mathematics, a subject which requires critical thinking and logic as well as good understanding of conceptual knowledge. All of these 4 subjects were endorsed with Excellence in NCEA, topped with two scholarships for Calculus and Statistics. From my further mathematical studies, I discovered some completely new and unexplored area of Mathematics. I was surprised to discover that some of the subjects, such as quantum mechanics, had such a significant underlying mathematical logic and concepts. This diversity of application further encouraged me to study Mathematics in depth and improve my logistics and reasoning abilities which are the foundation of all areas of study. I strongly believe that Mathematics will provide me with a strong base for a wide range of careers. I love working with people and socializing. That is one of the reasons why I wish to become a Maths teacher after completion of my tertiary studies.
