Graduation Speech: Henry Clay's Economic System

Hello everyone, I am Henry Clay, a member of the Whig Party. Over the years I have been a senator, Secretary of State, and the Speaker of the House, and I am currently a member of the prestigious Whig party. Also, I have solved several problems for this country and I have created an economic system which had greatly benefited America. I believe in a strong, and central government. Lets look at some ways I have impacted America already. In the Missouri Compromise of 1820 I had resolved a conflict over the admittance of Missouri as a free or slave state. As we can see, much of the tension in our country has come due to slavery. The South and the North have constantly clashed on this issue. Personally, I believe that we should abolish slavery, but as you can see I am willing to compromise on this issue in order to maintain the peace of the country. Moreover, I believe that the spoils system is extremely bad for society. If we allow the “spoils system” to exist we will give increased power for the executive branch. If you look at Andrew Jackson, who undercut the Supreme Court several times, specifically when he sided with Georgia, and states’ rights in the case of removing Indians. I strongly support and stable and strong government and don’t believe that we should have leaders who try to use too much of their executive power, instead we should rely on the Congress and the Supreme Courts to pass laws and make decisions. If we allow tyrants, such as Andrew Jackson, be leaders of America we will have lost all sense of law and order. I also believe that that the Union could be held together, which I have shown through my proposals of the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise Tariff of 1833. Zachary Taylor a close associate of mine and another member of the Whig Party also supported unity and was against secession. I also want to point at this time that John C Calhoun was in favor of the South SECEDING FROM THE UNION when he was unhappy due to Jackson’s tax. Now I know I worked
