Graduation Speech: Jane Addams To Survive High School

Greetings class of 2018. Today at this promotional ceremony, is the day where we move from being students of Jane Addams to freshman of BHS. We get these pieces of paper from the school recognizing this fact, and then we’re kicked out of middle school for good. Today is the day where we get to thank the principal, Ms. Polson, the vice principal, Ms. Zdonek, the teachers, and the staff of Jane Addams for helping us and teaching us lessons that would help us get not only here, but survive high school. Thank you to the superintendent, as well as the school board for keeping this school running and changing it every single year. While some of you coming into middle school were like “I'm so prepared! I'll immediately make some new friends and become who I want to be” others had the impression of “I don’t want anything to change life is perfect just the way it is.” I was one of those people. I needed motivation to help me with change so when I first came into middle school, I had this white board with messages from my parents, and on it my dad wrote “don’t trip”. School taught me well, but sports taught me better. I'm a runner, but I was never as good as I was today. Throughout the 3 years, I’ve figured out that in order to be the best, you have to actually train. You have to train to be the fastest out of everyone, for as long as you can. The running never stops. If you give up running trying to improve and strive for the better, you’ve failed to show grit, and you’ve “tripped.” Sports like Cross Country are a team sport, so if you want your team to be there, not only would you have to encourage yourself, but do the same to them.
