William Mason Grosvenor took issue with the illegal secession of the Confederate States and why they were able to possess all their constitutional rights as member states of the United States. He believed that the Northern states had the right to dictate social changes in the Southern states, on the foundation that the South was practicing laws that disregarded the Nation’s Constitutional laws. Grosvenor argues that because the North won the Civil War, that they have the right to enforce Northern laws upon the Southern states. Others like Herman Melville, argue that the North should provide a humane and range-free reconstruction policy on the Southern states. (Dudley 9).

). After the wedding nuptials, Agrippina must have realized that it was possible to make her new husband choose her son Lucius as an heir instead of his biological son. All she would have to do was convince Claudius to adopt him, and then show him that Lucius was a better candidate as his successor than his own biological son. Agrippina showered Lucius with the empire’s brightest tutors. She also focused her attention on the Praetorian Guard, the elite soldiers that acted as the imperial palace’s security force.

To what extent can literature help us recognize our flaws and improve upon them? Growing up I have always been told that by accepting your flaws, you can improve upon them and not allow anyone to use them against you. Although I do agree with this point, I feel as though this it is mainly directed at physical insecurities and not flaws within our values and views. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald was one of the first novel I read that made me realize how much of an impact literature has on us and made me realize the imperfection of society.
F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel, The Great Gatsby, follows the the life of self-made mogul Jay Gatsby during the roaring 20’s. After separating from his true love Daisy, Gatsby decides to reunite with her in the hopes of rekindling the romance they had together before he left. However, is Gatsby’s thinking and hopes viable? Fitzgerald raises the question of whether or not we are able to manipulate time. To a great extent, Fitzgerald demonstrates through Gatsby and Daisy that ultimately we cannot reconstruct time to our
In most modern literature and film there are extremely noticeable archetypes among the characters. In superhero movies characters such as Batman and Captain America are quickly placed into the “hero” archetype and their almost equal arch nemesis’ are easily identified as the villains of their stories. However, what is not commonly done is further exploring these archetypes and simple behavioral details in order to further diversify these characters. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald’s different writing style along with decisions the characters make allows for a much more difficult time pinpointing each character’s explicit archetype; Fitzgerald’s writing style along with the narratorial design of the story permits these archetypes to change

“At his lips’ touch she blossomed for him like a flower. ”(103) Reading this phrase in Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, you are probably picturing the kissing scene in the happy, cheesy romantic Disney princess movie you watched last Saturday. However, unlike Cinderella or Snow White, in Nick’s account of Gatsby and Daisy’s first kiss, their love implies something much more than that, and the chief way that Fitzgerald elevates their love to that level is through his miraculous descriptions.
Every person has regrets. Someone that they wished they had said something to before a divide, or something they would have done to change the outcome. An important part of life is learning to move on from those and accept where you are now; this is something that Gatsby never learned how to do. Gatsby spent this whole book chasing after Daisy, and is a very relatable character to most since every one of us is chasing something. However, Gatsby is chasing someone he’s lost forever, and you can’t necessarily fix the past as Gatsby wanted.
It’s nearly impossible for a book-lover like me to answer what my favorite book is; it’s usually whatever book I’m currently reading, assuming I find it exciting, which is usually the case since I quit reading books I don’t find exciting. It's even harder to answer since I’m a fan of all sorts of books: fiction, non-fiction, self-help, poetry, plays, genre novels, classics… However, if I was forced to choose, I would pick The Great Gatsby. I feel that it's the closest anyone has come to writing a perfect novel. Its words are so scrupulously chosen, it's like a refined piece of poetry.
Summary: “Against School,” by John Tayler Gatto In John Tayler Gatto’s ‘Against School,’ he argues that children and teachers alike have become bored with the notion of schooling. That there is no room to learn skills to build upon one's character but rather to keep busy. Children become bored of the structured material that they are forced to learn. Thus the teachers have no motivation to teach the children when there is no effort put forth. The structure of the education system causes an individual to become stuck and unable to learn skills useful to their character.
