Introduction Deviance is mostly about singling a single individual, and figuring out why they are different. A more in depth study would involve groups of deviant people, and why they decide to disassociate. An even deeper study would be looking into what attitudes, behaviors, and conditions certain groups have. What makes studying this so hard is that most deviant groups don’t openly tell the public what they want. Some groups only let people into their inner circles unless they closely resemble their own thoughts. In the 21st century urban gangs serve as prime examples, gangbangers only allow members into the gang after they have proven their loyalty and worth. The researcher is able to ask members questions directly to individuals who share the same concept of deviance, since they are in the same devient community, they all share that thought process. The first hand experiences also remove the possibility of bias against the specific deviant group, making this method very useful. Though it does provide accuracy, the method may be dangerous in affiliation with gang culture. . While making sure that you are safe when researching, you must also consider the story you are trying to tell, the most reasonable choice for this type of study would be to tell the story of the gangsters, from their point of view. Most of them didn’t have much of a choice, born and grown up in a gang society, to them it is normal, to another neighborhood, it is deviant. Police reports do help us, but the cops aren’t involved in every street shootout, our informant could supply us with said data. Knowing how much gang activity is going on helps us understand who is in charge, where supplies are coming from, and maybe even predict any next moves a gang is plotting. With enough data we can conclude what exactly the gang leaders are after, territory, money, or maybe drugs. We could then ask our informant to go and ask gang members, why they think the gang needs the money, territory, and drugs, the answer will vary. Then take it a step deeper and ask the members why they serve the leaders, why live this life. Based on how high up the hierarchy our informant is, the results would be much different. Suppose we have someone who is well near the top, asking the gang leaders themselves is the most precise way to find out the reason for deviation.
