Page 127 in the Book “Saints” by Gene Luen Yang develops the theme of identity and how it is shaped by culture and faith through the portrayal of the main character, Vibiana, and her struggles to reconcile her Chinese heritage with her newfound Catholic faith. The page provides a rich source for interpretation through its use of graphic techniques which convey the theme of the power of faith and the struggles of reconciling different cultural identities.
On page 127, Vibiana is reconnecting with her cousin, surrounded by dark woods only in black and white. The dark woods in the background show a different identity between the two characters through the tone of the trees, and the use of only black and white shows ambiguity between the characters. When Cousin Chung and Vibiana come together once again and hug, you can see the different tones of the trees, showing light and dark contrasting with one another. When Cousin Chung is speaking about “making our nation whole again!” (Yang 127) represents his sophisticated identity for his religion. When Cousin Chung speaks in such an assured tone about his religion, Vibiana immediately sounds concerned and disorientated. This development in her speech reveals her struggles to reconcile her Chinese heritage with her newfound Catholic faith. The use of dialog is used to give insight into Vibiana's inner turmoil, which is a central theme in the graphic novel. The use of dialog also provides a window into the main character's inner thoughts and feelings, giving a deeper understanding of how different cultural identities can clash and what it means to reconcile
