The Evolution and Significance of Grave Stones Gravestones are recognized as grave markers, tombstones, as well as headstones and have been used throughout history in memory of the deceased. In ancient times before the existence of cemeteries, families would bury their loved ones near their homes. At that time, families would place wood, rocks, or stone on top of the grave to keep the dead from rising. The modern notion began to evolve during the 19th century, the gravestones became personalized to each individual stating the deceased date of birth and death, as well as a quote, symbol, or a couple noteworthy words placed on their gravestone. Gravestones signify the family or individual’s social class, religious beliefs; they have advanced considerably since B.C to the 21st century, which caused gravestones to evolve into a modern work of art. Social class has a big role in the selecting process of a gravestone; depending on your occupation or the families’ financial state a person can afford a more luxuries memorial.
