In the story, “Your Question for Author Here” by Kate DiCamillo and Jon Scieszka, the main character (Joe) struggles with a person vs person conflict. He writes a perfunctory letter to Maureen O Toople and acts like he doesn’t care. As a result, he does not get his author answers. The piece of evidence is going to show the start to the conflict and how it begins. “I actually picked you mostly to annoy Jennifer, because she is crazy about your books and is always talking about the houses or princesses or whatever is in them” (106).

Ponyboy’s initial attitude towards the Socs was all about looking cool and tuff all the time. He was raised that way, trained to hate the rich. “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped.” This shows that Ponyboy was trained at a very young age to be on the lookout for Socs at all times.

In this story Socs are seen as rich and snotty kids. They come from wealthy families that spoil them and never discipline them, we know this from Bob’s story. We see the Soc’s as kids that get good grades, wear nice clothes, and have the perfect life with no struggles. However Socs are really a big threat in this story, at the beginning Ponyboy says he got jumped by a group of Socs who threatened to cut off his hair. This is a regular type of thing where Socs go around jumping and beating up Greasers because of how they dress and look.

The first example of Ponyboy realizing that Socs are human is with his acquaintance, Cherry Valance. “We have troubles you’ve never even heard of". (Hinton, 34) Cherry is trying to explain to Ponyboy that Socs have problems that are entirely different from what the Greasers have.
Then there 's the Greasers, who live poorly and get blamed for most of the things that go down in the city. Ponyboy, and Johnny, two Greasers, that at first, clang to the fact that they hated Socs. All they wanted to do was fight the other gang to look tough and earn respect. In the beginning of the story, Ponyboy wishes he looked tough.
Second, Cherry tells the truth in court about what happened at the park and why Jognny killed bob, she defends the greasers and says the socs were drunka nd looking for a fight and they were beatting up ponyboy and drowning him and johnny had no choice, it was self defence. Randy did the same thing for the greasers because they new it was the right thing to do. Cherry new they were good people and never killed bob on purpose. Third, Cherru helped them look at things and people differently. the greasers realized that the socs arent that different from them and that everybody has problems no matter what side of the tracks u come from.
For instance, they have money, and money can buy whatever they want. Similarly, Pony expressed: “I really couldn’t see what the Socs would have to worry about - good grades, good cars, good girls, madras and Mustangs and Corvairs - Man, I thought, if I had worries like that I’d consider myself lucky.” Assuming that the Socs have no problems, Pony comes to the conclusion that it’s only the Greasers that have all the rough breaks. Next, Pony thinks that the Socs aren’t fair because they jump Greasers for fun and don’t think about the effect that it has on the Greasers. Furthermore, the Socs don’t fight fair, they gang up on the Greasers and they intimidate them.
Many people have used violence to solve problems that they have at some point in their life, but as you look back at what you accomplished, you realized that violence doesn’t help you in a good way. Ponyboy learned that the hard way. In The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton presents the idea that using violence against your rival(s) isn’t the solution, it is the problem. One scene that reveals the idea that violence isn’t the answer and that it can only hurt others, was in Chapter 3 when ponyboy talks about what happened to Johnny. He said, “Johnny was lying face down on the ground.
Before the rumble Ponyboy realized the difference between his gang and the Socs. “That was the difference between his gang and ours- they had a leader and were organized; we were just buddies who stuck together- each man was his own leader.(Hinton 138)”. The Socs were just a group of adolescents together for social reasons and were engaging delinquent behavior. The greasers stood up for more than that; they stood up for Johnny, for the hard times they’ve been through, for their respect.
