When words fail, music speaks. The music in The Great Gatsby film gained much controversy. Numerous critics were all for the unique soundtrack, however others were against the odd music choice for the movie, claiming it did not fit in well with the plot. Despite reading all the thoughtful comments made towards the soundtrack, I still fully believe that the music choice was wonderful and fit in well with the scenes. The one song I thought went amazingly well with the entire movie was Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey. The song is about love, aging, beauty and insecurity which are all portrayed from either Daisy or Gatsby throughout the novel and their relationship. The tone and instrumentals in the song gives it the 1920’s feel, but it also has a modern element to it, which fits perfectly into the story. Seeing as though the story is based off the 20’s era, but it has all the contemporary aspects to it making it seem a bit more new. Love was a very big aspect during the 1920’s and that theme is shown throughout the entire novel, consistently. The line, “I know that you will,” constantly comes up in the song, and that makes me think of how even though Gatsby was insecure, he had faith that Daisy would choose him. Jay Gatsby believed that Daisy was willing to leave and start a new life with him, away from the riches and glamour of New York. He died believing that. Just like the verse "I know you will." Another lyric which counters what Gatsby believed in was “he's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds,” makes me think of Daisy, and how she is incapable of seeing Gatsby’s love for her, instead she is blinded by the wealth that Tom provides for her. Jordan Baker says “"The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some time, and because it was so romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since" (75). This explains that Gatsby’s feelings her Daisy were true, however they were not
