The four main themes are materialism, social networking, persona, and celebrity. Humanity is very materialistic by nature. Fitzgerald uses materialism is associated with society today because it is one idea that Americans strive for. Objects like money, love, possessions, and status are goals individuals wanted in the past and currently. For instance, Gatsby was the king of materialism because he had all four, well almost. He wanted Daisy most of all and that was the one thing that he could not keep. Today people want these four things as well, for they are a part of the American dream. Gatsby’s dream was to impress Daisy by his wealth to win her back, but since he was so obsessed with the past he ends up losing her altogether. Humanity must then explore the evils of social networking. In The Great Gatsby, people social networked by attending parties and Nick Carraway gets to meet a number of people throughout the book. Most people strive for the American dream, however sometimes things do not happen as planned. Also sometimes when people want the world to happen a certain way, it tends to result in the opposite direction. Gatsby was desperately wanting Daisy and her love. He did the extreme to try and win her back involving criminal actions in the background. Daisy stayed with Tom even after Gatsby told Tom that Daisy had never loved him. A murder scene takes place and the American dream has been killed. This novel tells us that even during the roaring 20's and after the war had ended that there still is darkness in the world. Happy endings are pretty rare in the world and in a American dream. On the contrary, when life is sparking up and there is things to celebrate for then celebrate one’s life. The American dream is real and it can make many people happy, it just does not always end well. On the other hand, this novel also tells the reader that life is about communicating with other people’s lives. Humans love to keep each other company and interact with other people.
