The Great Wall of China: Did the Benefits Outweigh the Cost? The Qin and Han dynasty built the notorious wall we know today as The Great Wall of China. Although, The Great Wall of China has many benefits, but it does come with some costs. The benefits of the wall are great I do not think they out weigh the costs.
The Great Wall was made by the Qin and Han dynasty's to keep out invaders and other enemies. The benefits did outweigh the cost because it kept your city protected, it was harder for invaders to attack. They also put troops in the frontier areas of the Wall to increase the security level. According to document A it states that "the government will construct walled cities, well protected by high walls, deep moats, catapults, and thorns." This shows that the Qin and Han wanted to make it harder for the mongols to attack and that china wanted to be prepared for when other dangerous situations happen.

The benefits of the Great Wall did not outweigh the costs. The reason being the amount of deaths and ineffectiveness to keep people out. During the construction of the wall many soldiers died and suffered. Both the Qin suffered during the construction.
The Great Wall was constructed by the Qin and Han dynasties. they built the Great Wall to be protected by the Xiongnu. However the benefits of building the Great Wall didn't outweigh the costs. According to Document C, evidence supports my claim by stating," According to poetry and legend, tens of thousands of soldiers died from hunger, sickness, and extreme heat or cold." This shows how the loss of soldiers happened by constructing the Great Wall they could've just have more soldiers protect around China.
After the construction of the wall, everyone was safe and they were protected from invasions. Another benefit is travel and trading purposes. In Document D, Wu Di used to wall to the help travelers and merchants influence the world in trade with other nations. The wall made a way for people to travel, helped travelers and merchants reach and exit China and protected people in and out of China.
Lastly, the Xiongnu would keep invading China, so over the years the Han would give them more and more silk as the tribute. In document C I can see that every couple of years the Xiongnu would come back for more silk. The Han were the only ones that produced silk, so everyone wanted it. This tribute did work as long as the Han kept giving the Xiongnu more silk. The Great Wall was some protection against the Xiongnu if the Han paid tributes and stayed
The Great Wall of China was created a long time ago. It borders northern China and is 5,500 miles, including length of the entire wall and the branches. The wall started in the Qin Dynasty and lasted until the Ming Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty rebuilt the wall. The people who helped build the Great Wall were slaves, peasants, criminals, and people that were punished by the emperor.
The Yuan Dynasty under the Mongol empire has an extensive amount of public works as they built granaries to protect the dynasty from famine, and created large road and water networks. These public works allowed for the people to have large surplus of food and water and also be able to travel in a more organized manner with the road system created (New World Encyclopedia, Country Studies). Everyone in the Yuan dynasty had access to these public works as they were used to the economy and to keep everyone fed. While having these very useful public works the Yuan dynasty also had lots of techniques using technology for warfare and engineering. While using new warfare technology from the Chinese the Yuan were able to create a strategy to take down fortification by studying the way forts were made.
The cost of the Great Wall outweighed the benefits due to the fact that it allowed for and caused lots of suffering, harsh working conditions, and socioeconomic disparity. Despite being made to reduce suffering, the building of the Great Wall did the opposite, negatively impacting those who weren’t even working on the wall. In the Qin dynasty, many were sent to work on the wall. It states “Soldiers forced to leave their families and villages for several years” (Document E) Not only did soldiers have to endure the hardship of leaving their families, the families were likely in despair at losing a family member.
