Greece and Rome shared aspects of their belief systems, social structure, and expansion and conflict. Both civilizations were parallel in their belief systems and both had similar social class values and ideas. Greece and Rome are different in the area of state building. The type of government structure was diverse in that Greece had regional kingdoms and Rome was centralized. These civilizations are the two most similar classical civilizations. In their timelines, these civilizations had a series of the same events and led to comparable societies. These cultures have spread and sustained the most popular religion today. Greco-Roman culture has given us comparable ideas about government and other everyday aspects of our lives. The belief systems in the Greek and Roman societies are almost exactly the same. Both civilizations would have a period or periods of civil war. In Greece, civil war started after the Greeks defeated Persia in the Persian Wars. The Peloponnesian War would be when the Greek city-states fought against each other. The chief leaders were Sparta and Athens. The Spartan side won but this would result in the weakening of the Greek empire as a whole. The Romans had multiple phases of civil war. After Rome extended its ruling over Carthage and Iberia, The First Triumvirate would battle for complete control over Rome. Julius Caesar would win control but later be assassinated. This formed the Second Triumvirate in 43 to 36 B.C.E. Mark Antony and Octavian would battle for complete control of Rome. Octavian won and would become the sole ruler of the Roman empire. After both civilizations would have civil war, they expanded their land across the Mediterranean and into west Asia. These empires would both compose the largest empires of that time.
