In the novel Lord of the Flies, written by, William Golding, readers explore what causes humans to make certain choices and how these choices impact all those around them. Golding's novel takes a deep dive into both of these questions when a group of young boys all end up on a deserted island together. With absolutely no resources or rescue in the works, they are forced to build a community and try to work things out. This novel displays that greed and fear are two big attributes that affect human behavior. He also looks into how human behavior affects others through constant conflict throughout the novel. Now you run after food―"’ (pg. 184). Could this be from the stress of loosing all his boys to Jack or maybe because he knew that he was out of power now that the groups have split. Either way this feeling caused him to finally get frustrated and speak out on his behalf. Jack continues to argue with Ralph and during this Simon begins to walk out of the woods after his adventure to look for the beast. As he peers through the trees, he is brutally attacked by Jack and the other boys. They soon realise it is him and not the beast afterall yet, the continue to kill him. Why? Could it be from built up anxiety adn frustration? Did they have something against Simon? Again, it’s not exactly clear. At the end of the night, they drag Simons body to the ocean adn the groups split off again. At this point, its just Ralph and Piggy by themselves. Little did they know, Jack and the boys were planning to kill Ralph, they wanted him out of power completely so that Jack had full control over the island. They were planning to set the island on fire and then surround Ralph so he had nowhere to go. Their plan works, both boys are trapped by Jack adn his group. Heavy physical conflict breaks out, “Jack swung with his fist at Ralph and caught him on the ear. Ralph hit Jack in the stomach and made him grunt” (pg. 222). The outburst continued and Piggy made his way up to this lever contraption made by some of the boys. To the boys surprise, Piggy leaned on the lever by accient and fell to his death. Ralph was speechless. Jack’s tribe begins to scream adn shout as Jack says, ‘"See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you any more! The conch is gone―"’ (pg. 224). Ralph was now completely surrounded by Jack’s tribe but little did he know this was a good thing. The boys had set the island on fire to force Ralph into one spot, but in this process, it also drew the attention of a nearby Naval boat. Soon enough, the boat arrived on the island
