In the book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the main character is Ebenezer Scrooge. A Christmas Carol is set in London, England on Christmas Eve where we first meet Scrooge. Scrooge is a character who dislikes the holiday season and tries to find ways to not be involved in them. Scrooge's hatred of Christmas is because of his life experiences that have happened throughout the years. His childhood was filled with loneliness and he would spend Christmas alone, his fiance, Belle, left him one Christmas because Scrooge was too greedy and loved money more than her and everything else. Before meeting the ghosts, Scrooge could be described as greedy because he doesn’t give regard to the feelings of others, but afterward, Scrooge could be described as selfless because he grows to not hate Christmas and becomes more accepting of others. …show more content…
Scrooge had a cold heart and became lonely because of it. In the book, two men come to Scrooge’s door asking for donations to accommodate the poor, to which Scrooge replies by saying he wouldn’t help and that “If they would rather die, they had better do it and decrease the surplus population” (Dickens 9). Scrooge saying this shows how bitter and cold-hearted he is to people in need. Scrooge feels no remorse for saying these things. In Stave I Scrooge is an unhappy man. Fred feels bad for Scrooge because his money has caused him to be greedy and pushed him away from happiness and the people he loves. Fred says, “His wealth is of no use to him. He don't do any good with it. He don't make himself comfortable with it. He hasn't the satisfaction of thinking” (Dickens 73). This shows how even Scrooge's family considered him to be a selfish and unhappy man and not just people who didn't know
