If you put your wants over your needs there is a good chance that you could absolutely ruin everything. Wanting things too much can show a lot about one’s personality. If you are too greedy, you can end up ruining people’s lives, or even your own. How do we decide what we want versus what we need, and what can result from a struggle between want and need? The short stories: The Necklace, King Midas, and The Golden Touch all shows what can result if you want things too much or put want over need.
In The Necklace the main characters waste ten years of their lives trying to pay for a necklace that ended up to be fake all along. This is all because the wife was a needy, and greedy person who just wanted too much. This story shows that being too greedy can ruin everything. She also treated her husband very badly. She was always so rude to him when he tries to help. Shot down all of his suggestions when he tried to help her look nice for the party. Also she made him do most of the work. The ending is pretty ironic because the whole time they thought it was a real diamond necklace, but it was fake and they bought a real diamond necklace to replace it and were in crippling dept. A greedy king who wants nothing but gold. King Midas loved nothing but gold. But turned everything into golden statues after he got the “golden touch” because he wanted everything golden. It even killed his daughter! The king’s greed made him accidentally kill his own daughter by turning her into gold. It also shows that all one really needs is the love of your family rather than wealth. This story has an ironic ending because even though the king liked gold he hated the golden touch. He almost killed himself. The Golden Touch is very similar to this one in terms of story and what happens but is still a wonderful example of putting want over
