Greek myth had a big following and may have seemed like a cult of its size centuries ago. With this big following, Greek mythology greatly impacted the B.C. era. It was a trend people followed and worshiped. Greek mythology had people convinced to follow due to the fear it created, the explanation it gave to certain events, the rewards received from following, and the explanation of the afterlife. In the article, “Powers of the Greek Gods • Greek Gods & Goddesses'', it states “Zeus was the ruler of the skies and was known for his animalistic ways with both goddesses and mortal women. He also had complete power over the weather, throwing bolts of lightning when angry that were said to be able to shatter mountains.” (“Powers of the Greek Gods”). This is an example of why people worshiped Zeus, as he was feared by many due to his angry, explosive nature. This most likely caused many to follow Greek mythology out of fear and seek validation to avoid punishment, which shows how Zeus influenced people to become followers of Greek mythology. Back in the 2nd millennium many natural occurrences, like natural disasters, lightning, etc., were left unexplained. This left people to wonder about these phenomena and their answer was found within Greek mythology. The article, “Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades: The Verticality of the Greek Gods”, claims “In book XV of Homer’s epic poem The Iliad, Poseidon explains how it turned out: ‘We were three brothers whom Rhea bore to Cronus - Zeus, myself and Hades who rules the world below. Heaven and earth were divided into three parts, and each of us had an equal share.’” (Botham). This is a story from Poseidon’s perspective of the brothers. It shows how Greek mythology believed in a Heaven & Hell system and explains their process of the afterlife. This explanation of the afterlife alleviates the uncertainty in the existential question of “what happens after death?” as stated earlier. It also provides consequences for bad actions which instilled fear, as previously stated. These factors show how the afterlife system in Greek mythology caused a gain in adherents.
