The role of women in The Odyssey is to exhibit the many roles that women perform in the lives of men. There is a quote that states that behind every successful men there is a woman; to which homer would probably agree. As it was stated before, we can make reference to such quote by picturing The Odyssey without woman in the epic. Without woman, Odysseus would probably make it faster to Ithaca or would probably die in many of the obstacles that Zeus was putting in his way. Men’s position or respect, in ancient Greek mythology, was determinate by the things had successfully fulfilled in their life but no men had ever recognize that such success is part of the role that woman have in their lives.
In the odyssey we learn that ten years after he defeats troy that he has still not returned home. A group of suitors who all think Odysseus is dead have taken over his palace, in hopes of marrying Odysseus wife Penelope and eating all of his food, all though that is not the whole story you can imagine with such an epic tittle that this was and still is an epic book. Throughout the epic, woman plays dominant roles in Odysseus’s voyage home. The rules woman can play is very cliche duties of what society would label them; a goddess, a wife or a scandalous seductress, each of these Each of these roles and events to Odysseus is the tale. Making the role of women more cliche.
Overall, women play a very important role in the journey of Odysseus and Telemachus throughout The Odyssey, helping and inspiring them, but hurting them as well. Although The Odyssey might be a little outdated, it's idea of women being important and playing a star role can be still carried through and seen in media
There are many huge roles to be displayed in society all throughout The Odyssey. The Odyssey was written by Homer and located in Ancient Greece. Women like Athena and Penelope play huge roles that initially help Odysseus throughout his struggles. The role of women in The Odyssey is to show how women could be obstacles, be great helpers, and show how they do it by being cunning. Penelope shows in different ways how she is cunning and loyal throughout the book.
Women are almost always overlooked in all societies. Despite that, the women form an important part of the epic, The Odyssey by Homer, it mostly tells about the adventures of a god-like hero named Odysseus during his 20 year trip home after the Trojan War. They touch upon many other characters throughout as well, but I feel the most important characters were the woman. They were the key factors in the book, the three main types of women: the good hostess or wife, the seductress, and the goddess. All of which were especially involved with molding the cunning and unfaithful Odysseus.
In The Odyssey, the female characters are not given as much of attention as men because the story focuses mainly on Odysseus’ adventures and point of view. During the ancient Greek era, men were seen to be more superior to women. Women we mainly judged on their looks. Their position in society is based on their husband’s success as a Hero or position in society. Penelope is more respected than other women due to her husband’s status as king.
Contrary to popular belief at the time, women play highly significant roles towards heroes and the male figures in The Odyssey. They give them aid, try to trick them, or seduce them with their irresistible looks. The women may not play the hero or partake in the main conflict, but they remain in the background, influencing the men in many ways. There are many other roles that women play, but these are the most
Women in The Odyssey Gender roles, specifically of women, were a little different back in 700 B.C. They played more of a typical role, expected to get married and have kids at a young age. They were expected to take care of the house and children, while their husbands were out fighting wars. However, while women in The Odyssey were greatly valued for their beauty, Homer reveals that they also had to be intelligent to be successful in their lives.
From the strong-willed Penelope to the cunning Athena, The Odyssey showcases the diverse roles and complexities of women. Athena helps Odysseus with his battle against the suitors in the hall. Athena guides all of Odysseus's arrows so then he can kill the suitors however he wants and without
The women played an important role in the odyssey. She is unique in their personality and relationship toward men. Every woman in the odyssey played different role, each woman defines herself in a different way. For example, Penelope is the wife of Odysseus in the Greek mythology.
Though women play a central role in the Odyssey the portrayal and characterization of said women is often times sexist and places most of the women in positions of power until Odysseus or one of the male gods comes along and puts a stop to it. All of the women are characterized with few traits, most of which only describe their looks, while the reader is constantly reminded of all of Odysseus good traits. Even Penelope, who is portrayed as the ideal woman, is only ever described as ‘beautiful’ and ‘faithful’. Though this does make sense considering the time period and how during the time women were considered property of men. With all of the different character and how they are written one would expect some variety in the description of women.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, there are many female characters who play the role of a villain. Calypso, Scylla, Charybdis, and the sirens are among the women with the largest, negative impacts on Odysseus’ journey home. Though some women, such as Athena, Eurycleia, and Penelope, are loyal to Odysseus throughout the poem. With such a wide range of female characters, they all contribute different things throughout the book, whether the impact of their actions is negative or positive. Regardless of the outcomes, Homer has quite a modern view of female representation in his poem.
The odyssey, an epic story, written by Homer portrays women in several different ways and therefore women play an important role. Set in a period close to the Trojan War, Men were recognized as of higher status then women, and were seen as the stronger gender. Stereotypically, a woman was judged by the wealth and position of her husband or father. A woman would be required to be married at a youthful age and have children. Typically, women were not educated.
Women are weak, helpless, and have no real purpose other than to serve men and take care of children. . . or so they were perceived in history. In the Odyssey, one can see that Homer’s portrayal of women challenges the depiction of women during that time period. Throughout the book, many women intervened in Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca, for better or for worse. One will see Penelope, Athena, Circe, and other women impact Odysseus’ expedition home.
