Theseus is a demigod who was known for his strategy. He lived with his mother in a hut in a place named Troezen. One day his life changed when he was beaten in a fight with a larger boy and went to the beach to have a wave cover him, but instead the sounds of the waves put him to sleep. He then woke up and saw he had been visited by a bird who told him, “do not fear your enemy’s size, but use it against him.” With the knowledge that the bird bestowed upon him he gained the heroic qualities of strategy and bravery.
Throughout history, people around the world have embarked on their own personal hero’s journeys. From great warriors like Achilles, to average people living on the streets. Every story is different and unique, like a snowflake. In the stories The Odyssey, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Alchemist, Odysseus, Edmond Dantes, and Santiago all went through their own personal hero’s journeys. All of their journeys are unique in their own ways, yet all of them can be compared to the hero’s journey.
Epic Heroes: Gilgamesh and Achilles Achilles, from the ancient Greek epic of the Iliad, and Gilgamesh from the ancient Sumerian epic has many similarities as powerful god-like heroes. Achilles was seen as arrogant, and Gilgamesh was viewed as ruthless. However, Both Gilgamesh and Achilles hold on to this grief and rage for their loved ones and in both epics we see this factor blind both men as they hold on to death and loss. In Homer’s Illiad Achilles is grief stricken by the death of his extremely close friend, Patroclus.

Heroes in Ancient Greece were exalted and looked at as eminent individuals within their own society. Heroes in modern society often appear supernatural or extremely skilled like Superman or Batman, but for the Greeks heroicness was often displayed through mundane deeds like fighting in war or having rational, common sense that affected the way certain these heroes completed certain tasks.
