Life Changing or Life Taking? In today’s society Greek life is looked upon as a harmful and detrimental thing in and around college campuses all throughout the United States; is this what they really are or is this just what others perceive them to be? Greek life is constantly receiving bad publicity in the media, “A string of ugly incidents has reinforced the image of entitled white men egging each other on to behave badly: chanting racist songs, sharing pictures of incapacitated women, hazing their pledges” so often times the majority of the population looks down on and frowns upon it (Berrett). When you hear about an event that’s taken place in and around a sorority or fraternity it’s never about the philanthropy work they do or the scholarships an individual has received, but about the harmful effects surrounding Greek life usually caused by hazing. The definition of hazing is the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation; usually when we think of hazing that’s exactly what comes to mind. We think of the older initiated brothers and sisters putting the pledges through gruesome obstacles to make them earn their place in the organization. Each chapter has their own organization that they are devoted to giving their time and money to so that they can help better the community that they live in. President Eva Kirschbaum, a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha said, “’Our main thing is sisterhood through service’” this is a very commendable thing and only someone who is truly interested in bettering the lives of others would be a part of an organization such as this (RSO: to Know). This is an aspect of Greek life that many are unaware of.
