Hermes Symbols Hermes was the messenger God of the Greek people and the symbols given to define him in the Greek myths are directly related to his roles. During his first day of life, after being born to Zues and very beautiful mountain nymph, infant Hermes captured a tortoise and used the shell to construct a lyre.
