Far off lands, wars between mythical creatures, heroes and heroin’s saving the world, gods that alter all forms of life, love and hurt, this is all creative components that go into the beautiful storyline of Greek Mythology. Students have read the Percy Jackson books, they have heard of the different gods and goddesses, but they have never actually submersed themselves into the history of these mythical stories. With a taste of history, literature, and art, the students will have the opportunity to jump into the myths and become the characters themselves. Due to this being an introductory lesson into mythology for the third graders, there will need to be a stress in vocabulary and background. I will start the class on the carpet to build the environment of story time. The students will spend the first few minutes of class becoming accustomed to the basic parts of Greek Mythology. They will recognize the history of it, be introduced to the vocabulary, and create a Family Tree Graph of the different gods and goddesses. Each student will receive a role in their group. The facilitator will be the group leader. They will ensure that each student is doing their job and staying on task. The reader will be the student who will read through the story for the group. They will make sure to use good tone and fluency. The Underliner will be looking for the characters. They will underline the main characters and what makes them special. The Highlighter will be recognizing the setting. They will be looking for a section in the setting that develops the Myth’s place. Finally, the Number Person will be in charge of recognizing the Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution of the story.
