The most common of these gods are the Greek ones. In Greek mythology the gods help to explain natural occurrences that happen in our daily lives. One of the more fascinating gods is Dionysus. He taught people how to grow and make wine until hera found him and turned him crazy; he wondered around in this state for 52 years (Smith page1)(schwab page 57, 58). This is why many cultures have similar gods to dionysus. Dionysus, not only the god of wine but of pleasure, had to of had some sort of appeal to him. He was very handsome man with shoulder length, wavy hair (houle page 80). In many stories he is portrayed to love being outside. This is why he is depicted to have long, coursley hair. Since dionysus was the god of festivities, he was very sociable. He was kind to everyone he met, but those who did not believe in his godly self were dealt with harshly (schwab page 58).to be surrounded by people who refused to believe in you could damage ones self pride. He acted in harshness so that others would believe. Dionysus is considered to be connected to other things too. Dionysus’ cunning plan was now starting. The women allowed no men to be around. So Dionysus dressed the king up as a girl and sent him to the place the women were worshipping (Houle page 84). They liked to dance and indulge themselves in wild festivities. Dionysus had put everyone under a spell. The women, who were in a trance, thought pentheus was man eating lion and proceeded to attack and kill him (Houle page 84). Dionysus’ plan had finally come to an end and everyone knew not to mess with him anymore. After a long journey Dionysus decided to return to Olympus, his home. He was one of the last gods to join and when he did, he decided to bring his mother, semele, back from the underworld (Mass page 58). Since he brought her back to life, she became a god too.
