Gary Paulsen, the author of “Hatchet” describes one of Brian’s traits by using actions. As stated by this quote, “When he was done he covered the two piles with grass he tore from the lake shore to keep the flies off and went back outside”, (69) Brian used his surrounding environment to produce an answer for a complicated problem. An ordinary person wouldn 't thought of a solution as quickly as Brian did in this particular situation. The answer for this problem seems simple, after you have figured it out. But it’s not simple while you’re looking for it.
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a novel about Lily, who runs away from home to Tiburon, after she and Rosaleen, her “stand-in mom” were arrested. Lily killed her mother at a young age, and she feels guilty about it. When Lily and Rosaleen are at Tiburon, Lily finds a picture of The Black Madonna at a store, which was the same picture that Lily’s mom had. This leads them to a pink house, where they meet August, June, and May. August is the oldest and is seen as the leader of the house. Before each chapter of the novel, there is a quote.
While the narrator has a Japanese background, her likings do not solely consist of traditional Japanese cultural values; instead, the author characterizes her as preferring non-Japanese food and pursuing her interests. The poem states, “I will tell you I have always felt funny using chopsticks and my favorite food is hot dogs.” People usually consider hot dogs as American food, and chopsticks are part of Asian culture; thus, the author demonstrates the narrator's preference for and identification with at least some aspects of American culture. One instance of the author characterizing the narrator as dissociative from Japan or any culture is when the narrator says she has “bad spelling and a messy room.” Meanwhile, the narrator is friends with a peer named Denise, who is not of Japanese descent, as Denise does not become interned like the narrator.
We are all encouraged to see the world that we are in today with a joyful eye, even though we forget to do this on many occasions. For it was not long ago in which the world was completely different. We can enrich our lives and accomplish far more if we do this simple task. However, we can become distraught with the negatives that life may bring. To this we as readers look back on the times of Harry Crews, and see what life was really like before the technological age in the United States.

The Unplanned Human Experiment “Too spicy,” said Elijah, the son of Dr. Steingraber, after trying a food that some believe to be a stereotypical child’s favorite. In Steingraber’s essay, “But I Am a Child Who Does”, she writes about her accidental “human experiment”. Her experiment consists of her two children, Faith and Elijah, having a very particular food preference. Their taste perception was based solely on direct experience and was not exposed to any manipulating advertisements. However, she does not address that advertisements are righteously wrong.

“Even their name is made out of limp French Fries,” she asserted. “Why would you want to eat their food? To her, the M in McDonald’s looked like two yellow, bent-over fries.” The imagery here allows the reader to picture the M in their mind as two fries that are bent because they are covered in grease. Through this vivid description of the M, the author displays her children’s hatred towards McDonalds, the fast food chain that every child loves.
Benjamin Hoff once stated, “In the story of Ugly Duckling, when did the Ugly Duckling stop feeling Ugly? When he realized that he was a Swan. Each of us has something special, a swan of some sort, hidden somewhere inside. But until we recognize that it's there, what can we do but splash around, treading water?” (Goodreads).
Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss is a book that is very popular amongst children and adults. I personally read this book repeatedly as a child and would say that it was also very popular amongst my peers and my cousins who I grew up very close to. In regard to literary merit I would rank Green Eggs and Ham high on literary merit the story flowed very nicely much like all of Dr. Seuss’s books. I would rate Green Eggs and Ham high for social significance as well since the book is about a cat that wouldn’t eat green eggs and ham because he didn’t think he would like it only to find out that he loved green eggs and ham once he tried it. The story has a lot of significance for children today, since most people reading the book are young children

“I carried it too far that’s for sure” (Ullman). This ironic statement made by Jeffrey Dahmer is a major understatement. Jeffrey Dahmer came from a broken family, and he received little support as a child. Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the nation’s most prolific serial killers, who murdered, raped, and had post mortem relationships with his victims Jeffrey Dahmer was born May 21, 1960 to Joyce and Lionel Dahmer in West Allis, Wisconsin.
Ruth Younger does the wifely job of making breakfast for her husband and son. “What kind of eggs you want?” (Hansberry 1913). “I feed my son Lena!” (Hansberry 1921).
To begin with, the taste alone of school lunches is beyond unsatisfactory. The meals provided by public schools are not appetizing. There exists a tangible disconnect between the enticing, nutritious meals advertised on the school board’s menus and what the students actually receive—pathetic portions and lukewarm meals slapped onto a tray. Children’s complaints about school lunches are often seen as trite. However, while common, they are not any less accurate.
