The iconic novel Anne of Green Gables is undergoing a 21st century makeover with the release of new Netflix original ANNE.
Anne of Green Gables has been a classic since it was published in the early twentieth century by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. It’s been remastered into numerous feature length films, kid spin-off series, newer children’s stories, and has even made its way to theater. Netflix is the most recent platform to pick up and adapt the story of Anne Shirley, the 11-year-old orphan who was mistakenly sent to a pair of siblings on Prince Edward Island.

She and Moira Walley-Beckett, three-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Winner of Breaking Bad and Flesh and Bone, are joining forces to write the entire first season of the show. Produced by Miranda de Pencier of Northwood Entertainment, the show is one of the most highly anticipated series this year, especially under the all-female, influential trio.
Elizabeth Bradley, Netflix VP of content, said she believes the timing is right for a revamp of Anne of Green Gables and thinks it’s pressing for Anne Shirely to change with the times.
“Anne Shirley is one of Canada's greatest gifts to the world, known and loved internationally, so we're thrilled to be working with the CBC and Northwood to bring this charismatic character to both new and old fans around the world,” Bradley said.
ANNE, while closely following the 1908 novel’s plot, adds new dimensions to the characters, storylines, and thematic issues. Topics to be explored in the upcoming series will heavily revolve around sexism, identity, bullying, prejudice, and trust. Characters will dive into perilous adventures throughout this coming-of-age original as they did in Montgomery’s novel, but Netflix’s modern twists on the story will create a more relatable narrative for all
