In 1993 Greg Mortenson failed to climb the K2, but ended up conquering something much greater than any mountain . This novel touches on the important role education has in making peace in the world. It goes into depth about the conflicts he faced throughout his journey to provide education for the children of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Along with the people who helped him complete his goals, he also found his own motivation that guided him to help others . This is evident throughout the story when Greg makes it his career to build schools all over Pakistan and Afghanistan. His devotion to the education of others has especially affected the girls of these countries. Before, many people thought that women shouldn’t be educated, that it wasn’t part of their traditions. More specifically Jahan, the granddaughter of the chief of Korphe, was affected by Greg’s actions. Jahan was the first women to be fully educated in her village. Due to the education she received she was able to start medical training in another village which no one would have thought was ever possible. Along with his belief of women's education, he also believed in the importance of education providing peace. Greg felt strongly that if people were properly educated they wouldn’t turn to violence to escape their life of poverty.
