The Analysis of Gregor’s Perspective Change in Metamorphosis Gregor’s sense of pride has changed in the story. In the beginning of the story, Gregor was prideful in his work, in the sense that he believed others benefited because of him. His pride changed later in the story because he was no longer able to provide for his family like he used to. Therefore, leading to a change in his sympathy towards his family, having to see how hard they had to work. Gregor had enormous pride in his work that gained income for the family. “’What a quiet life our family has been leading,’ said Gregor himself, and as he sat there motionless staring into the darkness he felt great pride in the fact that he had been able to provide such a life for his parents and sister in such a fine flat.” The family had racked up so much debt that he basically had to work for years just to chip off that debt. Gregor originally loved how the family would leave the door open so he could still be involved. He was now into a creature that hides about under a sofa and occasionally getting up to the window. He hated people coming into his room and wanted to be left alone. He used to dislike just the sight of the hospital, but now he starts to favor it. He also uses a sheet to cover his body when his family enters the room. Before his transformation, Gregor was a functional member of his family. He could work for them and gain the necessary resources. Him being an insect, he was no longer able to work and provide for them. This delayed grief, making him feel bad for not being able to help them. He had to deal with the grief of seeing his family struggle with debt and him not being able to do anything. Due to this, Gregor became more sympathetic towards his family’s struggles. He realized that life is not as perfect as he imagined. His self-esteem slowly dwindled into feeling
