Beowulf is an epic that shows good vs evil. It puts Beowulf against Grendel and in the
end Beowulf comes out on top. In The Odyssey all the survivors of the Trojan War return home
except Odysseus. He is stuck on Calypso’s island and she wouldn’t let him leave. Calypso is a
nymph on the island that falls in love with Odysseus. When he was finally able to leave to leave
he faced a lot of problems getting back to his house. Poseidon was mad at him, because he
blinded his son and because of that; Poseidon caused a lot of turmoil in the sea. In both of these
epics there are a lot of problems that the Odysseus and Beowulf encounter and overcome.

Beowulf was loyal to his father and paid off his debt. Odysseus was loyal to his
soldiers and saved them from being killed by the Lotus eaters. Both show grounded loyalty to the
ones closest and important to them. Due to all the overnight murders by Grendel, Beowulf
wanted to put an end to the problem, which took a lot of courage since the townspeople were too
afraid and scared of Grendel. He wanted to keep the number of murders down, which shows
loyalty and courage to even go against Grendel. The characters also show hospitality. An
example of hospitality in Beowulf is when he and a couple of his soldiers arrive in Denmark. At
first the people and the King are confused about his appearance. He tells him that he has arrived
to kill Grendel. After he clears up the confusion, he is welcomed into Heorot, and is given the

Back then, it was common for nobles or people of royal blood to show up to different
