The story of Beowulf took place in Denmark and was one of the earliest pieces of literature. Beowulf, himself, was “a hero who fights monsters, saves his people and finds himself” (4:34). “Beowulf is the name of a young warrior from the land of the Geats in southern Sweden,” he traveled to Denmark when he heard of the horrible things Grendel was able to accomplish (94). Beowulf and his men wanted to kill Grendel for good, he states on this fact that “I have known much peril, grim death dangers. Grendel’s ravages came to my ears in my own homeland” (94). But Grendel is not that only monster that Grendel ends up defeating by the end of the story. One of the monsters that Beowulf had to defeat was called Grendel. One idea that supported his claim was the idea behind Beowulf’s sword that the “blade had supernatural power and the very process of forging them must have seemed like a kind of spell working” (33:05). Along with the idea of Beowuld’s sword being magic, it was also said that “the smith…was a magician” (33:41). Based on the time period in which this was written, the idea of the smith being a magician was also supported based on this. Not only the ties with the supernatural but also the ties between the bible and the story too. This is based on “the monsters seen in biblical terms as Cain’s kin and that cultural tension between the pagan and the Christians lies at the very heart of the poem” (35:56). Another example of the bible being compared to Beowulf is based upon “a great stone cross from the age of Beowulf” (41:24). This cross was something that was destroyed but later put back together. He was seen as this figure when it came to his fighting of Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the hoarding dragon. This is because he was able to defeat all of them unlike anyone else that has tried before him. Based on Grendel, Beowulf was able to defeat him based on he “rose up over his arm and quickly grip that sickening hand…shoulder muscles sprang apart, a snapping of tendons, bone locks burst. The arm of the demon was severed from his side” (14:05). Beowulf was able to rip off Grendel’s arm and ended up killing him by doing this. This is something that no one has been able to accomplish before. He was also able to defeat Grendel’s mother by “a magic sword” (32:11). Based on the sword that was able to murder the mother “Beowulf’s blade had supernatural power and the very process of forging them must have seemed like a kind of spell working” (33:05). The blade in which he used was seen as having a sort of magic power to it since killing Beowulf’s mother seemed like an impossible thing to happen. The last thing that Beowulf had to defeat was the hoarding dragon. He was able to defeat the dragon by using his knife. When he used his knife against the dragon, it was said that he “hatched the dragon in half” (52:38). This was once again something that no one was able to do before
