In “Crime and Punishment: The saga of Richie Parker” published in Sports Illustrated, Gary Smith helps to explain just how many people are affected by a single sexual assault case. He does this in a very unique style by giving 12 sections explaining the incident from different points of view and the effects of a single crime. One person affected was Jill Agostino, the sports copy editor for Newsday. Her unnamed colleague had given her a copy of an article he was writing on Richie Parker and called asking if she liked it. Little did he know, stories like his were keeping her up at night, reminding her of the time she was raped nine years earlier.
Ethos also helps Logan by establishing her credibility as an expert in the field and reinforcing the validity of her arguments. By citing the work of other experts and referencing reputable sources, Logan demonstrates her knowledge and understanding of the issue at hand, which lends more weight to her arguments. With Logan's use of emotion, logic, and credibility, she creates a more cohesive and exhorting article, that truly cultivates the message that something must be done about street harassment, and as a society, we must become more vigilant and attentive to the issue. In 2017, many women began to come forward about sexual abuse and misconduct. Multiple Hollywood stars have been accused of some sort of sexual abuse or misconduct in the past year, including Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein is a big time Hollywood star that has been known to have a temper. Other Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Rose McGowan, have all spoken out against Weinstein. An article by Janine Rubenstein that was published in People magazine tells of these horrifying events.
When all the workers seem interested in any man that comes in the business, perhaps this type of relationship is required of the women that work there. This should be unsettling for the audience as no one should be forced for low pay to do something that is uncomfortable for the worker. Motivational Speeches Monroe’s Motivated Sequence, which has five steps, is used to design a motivational speech to present change in behavior. In the following paragraph I will explain each step using getting nontraditional students to go to college. The attention step is where you would explain how you are never too old to achieve your goals. Online colleges make it easier to go back to school without having to leave family which I feel will get the audience’s attention.
The antagonist of this story shows students that one event in their lives can change the way they percieve themselves. Smith highlights the importance of not letting things fester inside, but to instead talk about what is going on. As well as talking about the importance of speaking up against sexual assault, Smith writes about a topic that is avoided in our society. Sexual assault is something that is brought up occasionally, but students and young adults do not always realize the harsh reality of it.
Accompanying her reasoning as to why it is wrong she shares, "Women are excluded from some State colleges and universities." and "Women even receive heavier criminal penalties than men who commit the same crime. " This inflicts towards the audience that gender discrimination is wrong because while men are given an easy path to stroll through in life women are having to fight to even get a general education. She states that even though laws were established for crime, men have a simpler way to go about their charges while women are being prosecuted to the highest extents. Persuasive techniques in the sense of ethics is used to move the audience to an understanding of what is morally being done wrong in the situation.
After reviewing the New York Times article Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades, from a conflict theory perspective the feminist theory should be applied to the case of Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein’s habitual and constant coercion of women over his career exemplifies what a sexual deviant is. “He knew how to make small movies box office success and used it as private leverage.”(NYTIMES) Weinstein used coercive bargaining to obtain his goals and would rarely take no for an answer. He created an environment that was toxic to women and reaffirmed his own power and goals.

We must feel that we belong to a cause bigger than ourselves, whether that cause is with religion, culture, sports, etc. However, we also must feel that we, as individuals, are worthy to live and that we matter to the rest of society. Especially in this day and age, we are constantly being compared to others and being judged according to society’s standards. Without a unique identity, we will be lost in society’s expectations of us.
Stories engage an audience by inviting them into a world that is not their own. One way to tell a story is to “blow the breath of life back into it” , this highlights the importance of taking something that has already happened and telling it in a way that makes it seems as though it is the presence. When telling the stories of women who have been personally affected by the sex industry, I envision myself inviting high schoolers to put themselves in the shoes of these women and to imagine what it would be like. I strongly believe that stories are a gateway to engaging an audience. Imagine telling the story of a woman who was forced to film pornographic content, so that a student could watch it for their entertainment.
Sexual harassment and sexual assault are very serious issues happening today in the workplace. Women or men have suffered from unsolicited sexual behaviors that are typically provoked by someone “higher” in position. “Sexual harassment especially has been a fixture in the workplace since women began to work outside their homes” (Fitzgerald, 1993). It is solely the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees within are aware and are very cautions of laws, misconduct, and liabilities. Employers must enforce the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and further extend those laws and guidelines to their employees.
Sexual harassment is identified as any unwelcome and unwanted sexual advances, verbal or physical behavior of sexual nature and requesting for sexual favours due to which a worker’s performance is affected, he/she suffers from psychological trauma or an offensive/hostile atmosphere is created at the workplace. The occurrence of workplace sexual harassment is linked with several risk factors. The nature of job and particularly the gender ratio at a workplace and traditionally male oriented jobs are among the significant ones. These pose an increased risk for women to face situations of getting sexually offended or harassed.
