However, Grete undergoes more change than any other character in The Metamorphosis. Her metamorphosis occurs as her sympathy and compassion for Gregor slowly diminishes. Although Grete takes care of her brother in the beginning, eventually she begins to consider her job duties. She does not always enjoy her job duties, but who would? Taking care of a large insect day in and day out does not sound like fun, but Grete did it out of kindness. As she begins to mature and get involved in more adult responsibilities, particularly getting a job, her complete devotion for Gregor lessons as the novella continues. In the end, Grete begins to begrudge the role as his caretaker. We’ve done everything humanly possible to look after it and put up with it, I don’t believe anyone can reproach us in the slightest’” (Kafka 104). This is the perfect quote to demonstrate just how much Grete has changed. In the beginning, Grete would have never said such a hurtful thing about her brother, but as she underwent her change, Grete began to slowly gain confidence. She was not afraid of the repercussions that her words would have towards Gregor. At this point she was fed up with the whole situation and wanted to end it. “‘He’s got to go,’ cried his sister, ‘that’s the only solution father’” (Kafka 105). Grete continues with her rant about getting rid of Gregor ones and for all. She revealed her hatred towards Gregor, and let’s just say he did not take it so well. Grete’s changed attitude saddens Gregor to
