The authors agree that to develop into a proficient and competent grief counselor education, experience and instruction should be concise and sufficient (Granello, Ober & Wheaton, 2012). They also imply that without the proper training new counselors may be uncomfortable interacting with those experiencing grief. According to the 2016 Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Education Programs’ educational standards grief is not specifically listed (Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Porgrams [CACREP], 2016). Granello et al. (2012) also cited research that indicated counselors did not need formal instruction to offer grief counseling proficiently. Consequently, they also indicated that studies show many counselors are not accustomed to some of the grief theories especially those more recently developed. Granello et al. I agree with this and would also say this can be applied to any form of counseling. Counseling experience, personal experience and feedback from peers, instructors and supervisors can increase skillfulness and competency. Additionally, training may be needed to counsel those with other forms of physical, emotional and psychological disorders who may experience grief. In this situation the counseling would especially need to be tailored to the client.
