100 Years of Solitude In the novel 100 Years of Solitude , by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, there is an abundance of various types of solitude. These types are the solitude of pride, grief, power, love, and death. Each type of solitude is associated with a character in the novel and produced by different circumstances. There are many similarities and differences among the various kinds of solitude. The solitude of grief is most closely associated with Rebeca throughout the novel. After the death of her husband, Jose Arcadio, she falls into a state of grief and only focuses on that day in the past. For example, Rebeca, who is associated with grief and Colonel Aureliano Buendia, who is associated with pride. The difference between these types of solitude is very prominent in the characters. The colonel was the first person to be born in Macondo, making him have a sense of pride in his community. This leads to him being very successful with his title in the war as colonel. Yet, all the hardships he's bared causes him to lose all his emotions and disregard the past. He doesn't focus on the past or the future, but solely on the present. He burns his poetry, doesn't grieve the death of his bride, and makes and remakes his golden fishes projects. He continuously lives in a circle of the present. While, Rebeca differing form the Colonel, can only focus on the past. Rebeca suffers the losers, Jose Arcadia, this causes her to lose her sense of time. She locks herself in her house and is incapable of moving on. Her grief and emotions, unlike the Colonel, are so strong she chooses to only live in the past. Even though these characters and types of solitude seem very different, they also have similarities. Both the Colonel and Rebeca choose how to handle their emotions, even though they choose differently. They both suffer a loss and do not move on, choosing to live with no companionship. Another similarity is the Colonel choosing to only to live in the present
