In a democracy, such as our society it is common to relate to different traditions and behaviors perhaps not knowing the authenticity or reality of future outcomes. The themes portrayed in Grimm’s fairytales are illustrative of this concept. The main message derived from their fairytales is centered around life’s lessons and how to deal with “good and evil” and the determining factor in life’s future reward. Moreover, the theme of “good and evil” seems to be reflective of the “good and evil” that the Grimm brothers experienced in their own lives. In fact, it is evident that one major theme depicted in “Cinderella” and “Little Snow White” is karma, a person’s actions controlling his future fate.

Karma can be defined as a person’s actions controlling their fate for the future. In “Cinderella” there is both good and unpleasant karma, but in most cases the unpleasant karma is well deserved. The good karma in the story is represented with Cinderella herself. Cinderella is treated horribly throughout the story by her stepmom and stepsisters. The stepmom demands she does chores all day while the mother and sisters get to go out to the ball (Viktor, “Cinderella”). Even though she wants to go to the ball she stays home and respectfully does the chores (Viktor, “Cinderella”). In the end, the prince chooses Cinderella over both stepsisters, the mother was furious (Viktor, “Cinderella”). This represents the theme of karma, good things come to good people. The stepmother and stepsisters got what they deserved in the end, the bad karma. While the stepmother treats Cinderella as a slave, the stepsisters like to harass Cinderella but it is mostly because they are jealous of her. In return, they both ended up getting their eyes poked out by pigeons and became blind (Viktor, “Cinderella”). In other words, Cinderella’s journey throughout life was a great example of how being a good person will result in a fairytale future, the story shows how karma plays a big role in society.
