11.5- Christina Vass
The objective of this essay is to answer question 11.5 posed in chapter 11 of Business Research Methods. The researcher has been given data from a corporation regarding the annual salary of it’s 200 employees (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). The researcher has been asked to depict the data in ratio, interval, ordinal, and nominal form (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). In addition, the researcher has been asked to illustrate the successive loss of data as the presentation changes from ratio to nominal form (Cooper & Schindler, 2014).

Selecting observable objects (annual salary).
2. Establish a set of mapping rules: representation of the objects being studied based on characteristics of the object.
3. Applying the mapping rule(s).
“Combinations of these characteristics of classification, order, distance, and origin provide four widely used classifications of measurement scales: (1) nominal, (2) ordinal, (3) interval, and (4) ratio” (Cooper & Schindler, 2014, p.250).
Nominal (Classification) With nominal scales, the researcher is gathering data on a variable (annual salary) that can be categorized into two or more groups that are mutually disjoint and joint exhausted (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). The fundamental empirical operation associated with a nominal scale is the determination of equality (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). In this scenario, the researcher could represent the annual salary data obtained from the 200 employees in a nominal scale based on gender (male and female), attendance, or department in corporation.

The fundamental empirical operation associated with an ordinal scale is the determination of greater or lesser value (a > b > c) (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). In this scenario, the researcher could represent the annual salary data obtained from the 200 employees in an ordinal scale based on attitudes (salary satisfaction), performance, or department ranking.
Interval (distance) With interval scale, the researcher adds an element of quantitative categorization of the data characteristics (Stevens, 1946). The fundamental empirical operation associated with an interval scale is the determination of equality of intervals or differences (Cooper & Schindler, 2014). In this scenario, the researcher could represent the annual salary data obtained from the 200 employees in an interval scale based on age range, years as an employment, or salary wage.
