Is social media as great as many say it is? When asking most people, they will say yes, that it is a great tool for communication and has improved the world. However, after taking a closer look and stop to talk to those who use social media it is not as great as it seems. Texting and instant messaging are great forms of communication, but they cause an unneeded amount of stress to many people who use them, it also leaves very little room for privacy. The obsession people seem to have with social media is both stressful and dangerous, if people cut back on their usage the world might be safer place. In her article “Growing up Tethered”, Sherry Turkle supports this by explaining how texting, Facebook, and other similar media platforms cause stress and worry for people socially. Additionally in her article “George Orwell… Meet Mark Zuckerberg”, Lori Andrews talks about how social media and the internet has taken away privacy from people and allowed corporations and businesses to see everything they do. When looking at teenagers and young adults they are almost always holding a phone, tablet, or some other type of electronic. Many times, they will interrupt whatever they are doing, be it a conversation or even driving, to check their messages and alerts. When talking to several students Sherry Turkle discovered that while many kids knew they shouldn’t text and drive they just couldn’t help themselves.
