People can learn to grow. People don’t stay the same for all of their life. They experience life to grow and change with it. In the book Speak the character Melinda was sexually assaulted and she had to learn how to grow and accept that it wasn't her fault. The people in her life also grew and changed for the better when they knew the real reason she called the cops on the party. The characters Melinda, Rachel, and her peers all develop the theme that people can learn to grow and change. At a pep rally, Heather forced Melinda to go, she got picked on and basically harassed for ¨snitching¨ on the party. Sitting at the pep rally “The girl behind [her] jams her knees into [her] back. They are as sharp as her fingernails.” (Anderson 29). A lot of people got in trouble at the party because Melinda called the cops, so everyone blamed her even though they didn't take the time to ask her why she did it. But in the end, when people started to find out what really happened they started to apologize to Melinda and had more sympathy for her. On the last day of school, seniors were saying goodbye to teachers and one of them said, “‘Way to go. I hope you’re OK.’ With hours left in the school year, I have suddenly become popular.” (Anderson 197). The fact that people are apologizing to Melinda for how they acted before they found out what had actually happened at that party, shows how much they grew to understand things and that they shouldn't jump to conclusions before they know the whole
