Personal Purpose Statement and Growth Mindset There are more reasons than I can count for why I chose to attend the best business program in the nation. All the reasons start off as superficial reasons, but then further expand to display deeper and more personal motives for why I personally chose Commerce. To begin with, I decided to attend Queen’s Commerce because of the stellar reviews from alumni I talked to. This related to my personal value of wanting to make a difference. Hearing alumni talk about all their fun experiences and accomplishments in their clubs assured me that if I attended Commerce I would have a great time and outlet to make a difference in people’s lives. Being a leader is a very prominent principle of mine because of all my role models being leaders, for example my mother and Kobe Bryant. John F. Kennedy’s quote about leadership has stuck with me all my life, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” Being a leader puts you at the front of experiences where you learn the most from. This has affected my behavior in the way that I now act more confident and am more aware of people’s emotions (EQ) (Druskat & Wolff, 2001). Being born in Syria and then moving to Canada has made me value democracy greatly. As Canadian citizens, it is something we take for granted every day. I implement democracy by reaching a consensus in my groups involving friends and teams, instead of letting one person solely make all the decisions. Another person core value of mine is competition. Competition has always been a part of my life due to sports and school. In boxing, the competitive aspect of being the best man in the ring and winning medals would motivate me to work hard in the gym and train whenever I had free time. In school, competition in the class made me go beyond the teacher’s expectations and always strive for a 4+. Competition makes me give everything I do my best effort.
