Growth Mindset “Practice makes perfect”, is an old saying that has been heard for years. The origin of the saying has been linked back to proverbs of the 1550’s – 1560’s. Not knowing who the original author of this saying was makes it’s hard to know their mindset. Although, this saying leads me to believe that the author was someone who would believe the theory of the growth mindset. In the growth mindset just because you are considered smart or intellectual does not mean that you are guaranteed success. Consequently, just because you are not considered as intelligential or as smart as the next person does not mean that you are going to fail. One study was completed David Paunesku at Stanford University. During this study they presented subjects with education on by introducing people to the information that the mind is still growing and it pliable they can they can continue to learn by working the brain. The brain can grow and develop by being used. Furthermore, you can get smarter by working your brain. The struggling student could struggle less by using their brain to try different strategies. When asked to summarize what they had learned on student wrote, “The more you practice or study the more you learn. Your brain has neurons inside that grow whenever you learn something new. Even though you may struggle in a certain subject the neurons in your brain are making new connections and your brain is getting stronger and smarter. … Struggling in school is absolutely normal and we may feel and call ourselves ‘dumb’ during these times. If you practice using better ways to study and learn you will get smarter and might struggle less.” This was written by an underachieving teen after a 30 minute workshop. It was found that the poor preforming students who attended this workshop increased their grade point average 14 percent by then end of the semester.
